Can the ASUN Attorney General?

Updated at 5:40 p.m. to include compensation info.

Senator Jessica Purney (Education) is introducing a bill next Wednesday to can (read eliminate) the ASUN Attorney General position, currently held by Lindsey Sanford. President Reilly has renominated Sanford for a third term as AG. This bill was introduced in the last hours of the 76th Session, but was quickly killed.

Before we discuss the merits of this particular bill (and the bill itself), we wanted to give our readers a first shot. What are your ideas? Is the AG position worth keeping? Is it a problem with the position or the person holding the position?

We have supplied laws relating to the AG below.

Compensation
The Attorney General makes $5,000 per year, according to the Executive Compensation Act of 2008.

Resources
Executive Branch Act of 2007 (Title VI)
Election Code (sec. 4, generally, and secs. 10, 11, 14, 15)
Judicial Rules of Procedure (various provisions)

  1. I think they would be much more successful changing the pay structure of the AG to reflect the actual amount of work done. If the AG was paid $500/semester, that would probably place it more in line with the actual responsibilities the position carries. Also, Reilly would be much less likely to veto such a bill.

  2. Didn't she [Lindsey Sanford] say she wouldn't be applying for the position again at the last senate meeting? If she did, thats pretty ballsy to lie to one public body and then ask the same body, different people, to nominate you to a position of trust.

Lindsey is a nice person, but a horrible AG. Her opinions read like a fourth graders essay on "What are laws?"

The position has merit, but it needs someone who can use it to it's full potential. Sen. Purney's bill has some major flaws such as giving the job of defending the Executive Branch in the Judicial Council to the Legal Services department.

To Corinna's point, I doubt changing the pay will help the matter. Expecting better from less pay just doesn't make sense. But there is a underlying problem of students abusing their positions to basically sit around and get a paycheck without doing any work. I heard a rumor she collected paychecks all last summer while working in D.C. And then when a Senator sued the President over the Programming nomination she was no where to be found and the CoS had to defend the President.

You can't legislate good behavior, and this is a problem of a student not doing their job. The Senate should keep the position and reject the nomination.

  3. A couple more points...

Under the Executive Compensation Act as reported from committee only about a year ago, the Attorney General was originally part of Level IV, or $3,000 per year. It was amended on the Senate floor to raise it to $5,000.

The $3,000 level represented a pay cut of $2,760 of the originally fixed compensation for the AG, according to the committee report. Under the original compensation for the AG, which was in effect only for one year since it was included in an appropriations bill, the AG was to receive $8 per hour (ASUN Public Law 75-20).

As a side note, this research was possible because of the vastly better legislative history the 75th Session kept compared to the future sessions.

  4. Oh god...'the vastly better legislative history of the 75th session?' can you be any more obvious about your true identity?

  5. Yeah, it could be anyone who knows how to use the Internet. And Google. And can draw reasonable conclusions from information. The fact that you imply it's a former 75th session senator only reflects on your insecurities, "Megan." Or is it "Senator"?

  6. Or maybe he's batman! I knew all along it was Bruce Wayne. Who cares? All arguments should be consider for their merit and not their source. If you think he's an idiot say that, don't say that you think he's an idiot because he was in the 75th session
